Mthatha - International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane says saying goodbye to former President Nelson Mandela "won't be easy".

Speaking to SAnews at Mthatha Airport before Mandela's body was scheduled to land on Saturday, Nkoana-Mashabane said it was under Mandela that she became an ambassador at the age of 29.

Through this, she became the first 12 people of colour to be appointed as an ambassador.

"I think it is going to be very difficult to get into that mode of my Mandela moment because like many political activists my age, he has given us an opportunity and all have a story to tell about how he touched our lives," she said.

Nkoana-Mashabane said being at the airport to welcome Madiba home for the last time left her not knowing how to feel.

"Mixed emotions indeed, because he has given us an opportunity to interact with him not only as a leader but also as a father … on a personal level."

Those who have arrived at Mthatha Airport include ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe, United Democratic Front leader Bantu Holomisa, Communications Minister Yunus Carrim, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters, Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa and National Police Commissioner, General Riah Phiyega.

Mandela's daughters Makaziwe, Zindzi and Zenani and granddaughter Ndileka also arrived shortly just before midday.

Mandela's wife Graca Machel arrived at the airport just after noon. Winnie Madikizela Mandela has also arrived. - SAnews.gov.za
