Pretoria - The delivery of social services will soon improve drastically for the residents of Mzimkhulu in southern KwaZulu-Natal, thanks to the R27 million service centre to be built by the provincial Department of Social Development.
On Friday MEC for Social Development Weziwe Thusi and Harry Gwala District Municipality Mayor, Mluleki Ndobe, officially unveiled plans for the government structure, which will see residents getting various government services in one centre.
According to MEC Thusi, the department had decided to build the government centre to ensure that people did not have to travel long distances in order to get access to government services.
She highlighted that the centre will not only ensure that social services are improved, but will also create jobs. Nearly 70 job opportunities will be created during the construction stage and the focus will be on women and unemployed youth.
“We are very proud of this centre because it will change the lives of thousands of people. As a caring government, we take the welfare of people very seriously.”
Mayor Ndobe commended the department for investing substantially in the delivery of social services to the people.
“This project is massive. It will surely improve people’s lives and, as the district municipality, we are very excited about it. The building of the centre is one of the clear indications that we have a caring government which is passionate about taking the much-needed services to all corners of the province,” Ndobe said.
One of the residents who will benefit from the centre, Nosihle Jojozi, said she was impressed that the department had delivered on its promise.
"When we requested the department to improve its services here, we did not know it would do it so quickly. Indeed government delivers and we appreciate what it does for us as communities.”
The construction of the centre is expected to be completed in October next year. – SAnews.gov.za
