Zuma to listen to villagers

President Jacob Zuma arrived in Mzimkhulu, near Kokstad on Tuesday morning where he is expected to address a community meeting and later visit several government's-sponsored community projects.

Issues raised by the community are expected to range from poor roads, limited access to basic services like water and sanitation as well as unemployment.

The visit forms part of the President's on-site monitoring of government performance in the delivery of services to the communities.

Officials said the initiative, dubbed 'Siyahlola' - meaning we are evaluating - will be formally introduced today, given the success it has generated since the President undertook his first visit to the Eastern Cape in June 2011 to monitor service delivery in education.

He has also visited a number of other provinces including Limpopo, North West, and Gauteng.

The Presidency said Umzimkhulu was chosen after it received a special mention during the President's State of the Nation Address in 2011.

A resident of the area, Bongokuhle Miya, wrote on the Presidency Facebook page that his hometown of Umzimkhulu was in a poor, depilated condition, alerting the President to challenges such as flooding in the town, sewerage overflow and animals roaming the roads freely.

After the President mentioned the details of this posting in his address, a Presidential Monitoring team comprising of officials from the Department of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation paid a visit to the municipality to assess the nature of the challenges and proposed interventions by the municipality, in partnership with other spheres of government.

"The visit will give the President an opportunity to assess first-hand any progress with various service delivery initiatives in the area, including road diversion and re-landscaping, an upgrade of the storm water drainage system, a sewerage treatment a facility for animal pounding," the Presidency said.
