Pretoria - A new magazine is to be piloted to help public sector executives and managers improve the quality of the services they provide by reporting on management innovations and showcasing best practices within the sector.

The piloting of the magazine, aimed at middle and senior managers in the public sector, has been approved by government and is to be published monthly by Government Communication and Information System (GCIS).

The magazine will profile public sector/government executives and managers who represent a truly public service vision and can both encourage and provide role models to other public servants.

Chief Executive Officer of GCIS Themba Maseko said: "The magazine will be a platform through which to inform public sector/government executives and managers about public service principles, management and innovation in everyday government and public sector practice.

"It will also help those who do business with government and its agencies understand the needs of the public sector and the thinking of the managers and executives who, collectively and working within teams, make acquisition and procurement decisions amounting to billions of rand."

Two editions, one called Public Sector Manager and the other Government Executive, have been produced and will soon be distributed to a limited sample of public sector managers as part of market research.

A statement by the GCIS said the trial editions span the widest editorial terrain, including columnists, interviews with political principals and senior government officials, management and professional development articles, employee and pay benefit issues, upcoming events, and some lifestyle articles.

The latter covers business travel, car reviews, wine and food, style, real estate and health.

Feedback on these will determine which title to go with and how to further improve the magazine, said the GCIS.
