N3 highway reopens following protests

Tuesday, May 1, 2018

The north and south bound at Mooi River has been opened to traffic following protests there that resulted in the torching of 35 trucks on Sunday.

The N3 Toll Concession in its update on Monday evening said both the north and south bound lanes at Mooi River Toll Plaza were reopened to traffic.

KwaZulu-Natal police had earlier on Monday advised motorists using of the N3 highway to use alternative routes as there was still debris from protests where trucks were set alight on Sunday night.

At the time, Major General Bheki Langa said the road was still blocked due to the trucks that were burnt and that police were monitoring the situation.

On Sunday, at around 7:30 pm, a group of people began throwing objects on the N3 freeway and set some trucks alight.

The Concession said traffic along the route is free flowing but urged motorists to drive with caution.

A total of 54 people were arrested in connection with the incident and will face charges of public violence.-SAnews.gov.za
