Municipality working to restore water to Mazista

Pretoria – The Kgetleng-Rivier Local Municipality says it is doing all it can to restore water to the community of Mazista.

This comes as media reports claim residents are paying R10 to fill their buckets at a municipal water tanker.

Kgetleng-Rivier Local Municipality Director of Technical Services, Tertius Chiloane, said the municipality took the allegations that municipal officials were selling water to the residents seriously.

He said if they could provide details of those involved, the municipality would deal with the culprits.

“We appeal to the community of Mazista, those who have got proof of such dealings to come forward.”

He explained that the municipality had been hiring an electricity point from the Marico Lead Mine to power the boreholes that were supplying the area with water. But in January, the mine decided to discontinue their contract with Eskom and then Eskom switched off the power.

“Unfortunately, we had to suffer the consequences,” said Chiloane, speaking to the GCIS Radio Bulletin on Thursday.

He said the municipality then decided to negotiate with the mine and Eskom to take over the power point so that it can continue supplying power and thus water to the community.

“The process has been finalised and we will have that power point connected before end of business today,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za
