Mpuma hospitality sector fares well in compliance test

Pretoria – A relatively high number of employers in the hospitality sector in Mpumalanga’s Gert Sibande region are complying with the industry’s sectoral determination.

This was revealed in a report compiled after a rigorous process, which commenced last week Monday, in the region, as part of national inspections in Mpumalanga, North West, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

The inspections form part of Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant’s drive to ensure the protection of vulnerable workers in the country, by seeing to it that employers abide by all labour laws.

The department’s Deputy Director of Inspection and Enforcement Services in the province, Evelyn Mokoena, said out of the 49 workplaces inspected, 29 were found to be compliant with the labour laws around minimum wages.

Employers were also complying with the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, Unemployment Insurance Act, Unemployment Insurance Contributions Act and employment equity law.

“We appreciate this high level of compliance among employers and wish it can be replicated in other parts of the country. We also urge employers to collaborate with inspectors in the interests of productivity, economic growth and to promote sound labour relations at workplaces,” said Mokoena.

The current minimum wage for the hospitality sector, which came into effect on 1 July, stands at R2 415.86 per month for employers with fewer than 10 employees, while it is R2 692.74 for employers with more than 10 workers.

Mokoena said the ‘no nonsense’ inspectors will conduct follow-up inspections on non-compliant employers within 21 days. She also appealed to these employers to address areas of non-compliance pointed out during the inspections to avoid being on the wrong side of the law. – SAnews.gov.za
