Pretoria - The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) is urging road users to be cautious of its road infrastructure developments currently underway across the country as they gear up for the long Easter Weekend road trips.
Sanral is advising motorists to be extra careful when driving along areas with road works for their own safety and that of construction workers.
"Our roads are safety engineered but obedience to the rules of the road is still required for the safety features to be effective. The road signs, even temporary ones, erected along these roads need to be adhered to by all road users as they are an important component in the features that make a road safe," said Sanral boss Nazir Alli.
He further advised that temporary speed limits in construction areas are mandatory and road users can face penalties if they do not obey them.
"We appeal to road users to obey speed limits, maintain safe following distances and to be on the look out for pedestrians and stray animals. However, this should not only be an Easter or occasional thing but rather an everyday habit," said Alli. - BuaNews
