Ministers' Public Works accounts rectified

Thursday, March 17, 2011

Pretoria - The Department of Public Works says the accounts of ministers who had owed money to the department have been rectified.

Last year, media reports claimed that the Ministers of Health, Energy, Public Works, Defence and Military Veterans, Police, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the former Ministers of Intelligence, Ronnie Kasrils and Provincial and Local Government, Sydney Mufamadi owed money to the department.

The amounts were in respect of unpaid rent for their ministerial residences.

The department explained that the discrepancies in the payments by the ministers were a result of malfunctions in the system used by the department to collect payments, and not, as it was reported, due to the negligence of the affected ministers.

It further said that after having corrected the wrongs in the payment system, the accounts of the ministers had been rectified and the accounts have been balanced.

* Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi had paid R10 800
* Minister of Energy Dipuo Peters had paid R7 764.04
* Minister of Public Works Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde had paid R6 461.40
* Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Lindiwe Sisulu had paid R400
* Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa had paid R573.22 (on a monthly basis)
* Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Tina Joemat-Petersson had paid R1 180.16
* Minister of Intelligence Ronnie Kasrils had paid R1 880.61
* Former Minister of Provincial and Local Government Sydney Mufamadi had paid R6 058.14

The department has apologised to the officials for the inconvenience caused by the malfunction in the system.
