Malamulele - Communications Minister Faith Muthambi will this morning officially hand over four refurbished classrooms to teachers, learners and the school governing body of Peninghotsa High outside Malamulele.
The roofs of four classrooms in one block of the school were blown off by a severe hailstorm that hit the village in February last year. Minister Muthambi became aware of the situation when she visited the school in January this year as part of her Back to School campaign.
“We are doing all of this inspired by our late former President Nelson Mandela, who during his lifetime valued education so much… He saw education as a powerful weapon for freedom. We refurbished the classrooms because we strongly believe that with educated youth, this village will be developed.
“Twenty-two years into our democracy, we want our youth to inherit the legacy of unity in diversity, non-racialism and anti-tribalism. We want our youth to be patriotic, to love one another and also to refrain from destroying public infrastructure.
“Education continues to receive the biggest chunk of the national Budget as the weapon for socio-economic development,” she said.
The Minister will also use the platform to highlight the strides that government has made to improve the quality of life for all, including the youth, and work that must still be done.
South Africa celebrates Mandela Month in July. Mandela's birthday was on 18 July.
MTN SA Foundation Senior Manager: Education and Community Projects, Angie Maloka, said apart from refurbishing the roof, they also provided two compujectors to the school.
“A compujector combines a computer, projector and an interactive whiteboard into one versatile teaching tool that can be moved from one classroom to the next.
“It comes pre-loaded with the Department of Education’s curriculum-aligned material, thus assisting where textbook delivery remains a challenge. However, it needs electricity to operate,” she said. - SAnews.gov.za
