Meeting to strengthen informal economy

Pretoria – An Informal Sector Dialogue will be held on Thursday, to address the challenges faced by informal traders in the area of Empangeni, in KwaZulu-Natal.

Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant, together with Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande, Small Business Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu and KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Sihle Zikalala, will convene the meeting at the Empangeni Civic Centre at 8:30am.

All these levels of government are cooperating to address the challenges with the aim of strengthening and transforming the informal economy to formal.

The Departments of Labour and Small Business Development have been holding similar summits on informal economy around the country with the previous one being held in Bloemfontein, last month.

During the dialogue session in Empangeni, the resolutions from the last summit will be tabled and a plan of action will be mapped out.

Various stakeholders, including informal traders, labour movement, civil society, business, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) will be among the delegates that will attend and participate in robust engagements to horn out strategies of strengthening and transitioning the informal economy.

Furthermore, Minister Oliphant will also host the following events in KwaZulu-Natal:

  • A skills a development workshop in Empangeni for Grade 10-12 pupils on Friday, 22 July 2016.
  • Imbizo with workers in KwaSithebe (Mandeni) on Saturday, 23 July 2016.
  • Imbizo with workers in Ndwedwe on Sunday 24 July 2016.
