Mbombela - Mpumalanga's MEC for safety, security and liaison will monitor police operations at the Oshoek Border Post between South Africa and Swaziland in Mpumalanga on Tuesday.

MEC Vusi Shongwe will monitor the challenges faced by officials from the Department of Home Affairs and South African police and revenue services, who are stationed at the border post.

"MEC Vusi Shongwe will meet with the various departments and observe the implementation of security plans for the festive season by the border security agents," said department spokesperson, Joseph Mabuza.

He said the police were under pressure to process vehicles quickly to reduce delays and traffic congestion at the border, which was operating 24 hours a day over the festive season.

"After evaluating the situation, the MEC might make recommendations to add more staff to cope with the large volume of cars and people," said Mabuza.

He added that Shongwe would motivate the police in their work by participating in a stop-and-search operation for illegal goods and undocumented people.

Mpumalanga's border posts are traditionally busy over the holidays, especially in December, when thousands of Mozambicans and Swazis go home to visit relatives or come to South Africa on shopping trips.
