Musina – The Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site has reopened its gates to the public after being closed for a week due to heavy floods.
The World Heritage Site was closed on January 21 and has now been reopened to the public.
The museum will reopen later in the week.
Park Manager Fhatuwani Mugwabana said mop-up operations were still underway, with most operations almost back to normal.
“Although we still have another week before we can reopen the museum, the rest of the park is open to the visitors. For those who want to sleep over, our camps, including Leokwe and Limpopo Tented Camps, are open and ready to welcome them,” he said on Tuesday.
Fhatuwani advised motorists to drive cautiously and stay within the demarcated roads as the roads are still wet and slippery.
He said the park was inaccessible from Musina, as roads leading to the area were washed away.
Staff members who reside at staff houses were highly affected by the floods but are all safe and currently receiving trauma counselling.
“Most of the staff members were traumatised by the experience but we are doing all we can to ensure that they get help and resume their duties,” said Mugwabana. – SAnews.gov.za
