Pretoria - Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has placed the National Commissioner of Correctional Services Xoliswa Sibeko and the Acting Chief Financial Officer Nandi Mareka on precautionary suspension with immediate effect.
According to a statement released by the department, the minister made the announcement at a special Executive Management Committee meeting in Pretoria this morning. The statement however does not provide any details on the reasons for the suspension.
Minister Mapisa-Nqakula also announced the establishment of an investigating team by the Public Service Commission into the conduct of the National Commissioner.
Ms Sibeko, who was the Director General of Sport and Recreation, was appointed as the new National Commissioner of Correctional Services last October.
At the time, the then Correctional Services Minister Nqconde Balfour explained that the Presidency decided to cross transfer Ms Sibeko and Vernie Petersen, who was the former national commissioner of correctional services.
