Pretoria - Former President Nelson Mandela is doing very well, says Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane.

Updating the media on the health of the elderly statesman, Chabane said Mandela had the expertise of doctors around him all the time and that he was "recovering well."

The minister, who was briefing the media following the first Cabinet meeting this week, said Cabinet had wished Mandela well and a speedy recovery.

"Cabinet appeals to all South Africans to continue supporting him and thanks everyone who took the opportunity to pray for his recovery and send the family messages of support at this time," said Chabane.

Mandela, 92, was discharged from Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg last Friday. He is receiving home-based care after suffering from an acute respiratory infection.

Since then, friends and government officials have visited him at his home.

Chabane said the Presidency will keep the public informed on his recuperation.
