Mama Ruth's body returns home

Pretoria - The remains of the late struggle stalwart Ruth Mompati arrived in her home town, Vryburg, on Thursday.

Accompanying the body that was airlifted from the Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria to Vryburg was the family members who were received and joined by the provincial leadership and local community members.

There was a short traditional welcome ceremony at home, before going to church for a brief sermon. The body was then taken to a local mortuary.

The former Member of Parliament, ambassador and mayor, who was 89, died on Tuesday at the Second Military hospital, in Cape Town.

President Jacob Zuma has declared a Special Official Funeral for Mompati who will be laid to rest in Vryburg.

North West Premier Supra Obakeng Ramoeletsi Mahumapelo has committed the provincial government to working with the Presidency and national government in ensuring that Mama Ruth is given a befitting funeral. - SAnews.gov.za
