Mme Ruth to be laid to rest next weekend

Pretoria – The special official funeral of the veteran and icon of the liberation struggle, Mme Ruth Mompati, will take place in her home town next weekend, the Presidency has announced.

The special funeral will take place on 23 May at the Vryburg Showgrounds in Vryburg, in the North West province.

President Jacob Zuma is expected to deliver the eulogy at the event.

“President Zuma once again extends his condolences to the family and has reiterated that the passing of the highly regarded and admired stalwart is a monumental loss to the nation as a whole,” the Presidency added.

The remains of the struggle stalwart arrived in Vryburg on Thursday.

Accompanying the body that was airlifted from the Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria to Vryburg was the family members who were received and joined by the provincial leadership and local community members.

There was a short traditional welcome ceremony at home, before going to church for a brief sermon. The body was then taken to a local mortuary.

The former Member of Parliament, ambassador and mayor, who was 89, died on Tuesday at the Second Military hospital, in Cape Town. - SAnews.gov.za
