Pretoria - Former President Nelson Mandela is spending some time resting at his home village in Qunu.

Madiba flew to the Eastern Cape from Johannesburg on Sunday after apparently telling his family that he would like to go home.

In a statement, President Jacob Zuma confirmed that Madiba was accompanied to his home village by his wife Graca Machel and a full medical team.

"We are pleased that he is now well enough to travel," Zuma said.

The 92-year-old is reportedly in good spirits and happy. Last week, he made his first public appearance since his hospitalisation January.

Zuma thanked people for respect as well as the privacy afforded to Madiba, during that time and them to continue to do so.
