Local production improves textiles sector

Thursday, August 22, 2013

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma says the local procurement policy, introduced by government in the textiles and clothing industry, has helped to stabilize the sectors and improve local manufacturing.

Zuma was addressing the 12th Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (Sactwu) congress in Durban today. The union is the largest in the clothing, textile and leather industry in the country.

Under the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act, introduced in December 2011, all government tenders for the sector are required to source products in textiles, clothing, leather and footwear locally.

The Department of Trade and Industry is required to get supporting letters confirming the non-availability of those raw materials before a company can source abroad.

Zuma said this measure has gone a long way to stabilizing the industry and stimulating local production.

He urged companies to comply with this policy to strengthen the economy and to create and protect jobs. – SAnews.gov.za
