Polokwane - Motorists still using the old Limpopo registration plates have until July 31 to register for new plates or face penalties.
Provincial roads and transport MEC Pitsi Moloto said the motorists need to change any number plates from the letter "N", which stands for North, to the letter "L" which stands for Limpopo.
“All licence number plates with 'N' shall cease to be legal on August 1, and all vehicle licenses that expire after July 31, have already been allocated with the 'L' licence numbers. Failing to do so motorists will be issues some summons for penalties,” said MEC Moloto in a statement on Tuesday.
Department spokesman Joshua Kwapa told African Eye News Service that in 2002, the provincial government took an executive decision to use the “L” licence number system.
He said the process of implementing the phasing-out of the "N" licence numbers was for a period of 10 years, which started on August 1, 2003.
The National Traffic Information system vehicle register has been updated to automatically implement the process.
“Vehicle owners were however allowed to licence their vehicles with 'N' licence numbers for 10 years with the option to change to 'L' licence numbers voluntarily within the term of 10 years.
"Owners who licensed their vehicles for the first time from August 1, 2013 did not have any option but to licence their vehicles with 'L' licence numbers,” said Kwapa. – SAnews.gov.za
