Cape Town - The wait is finally over for the Class of 2011, as matriculants sit for their first written examination this morning.

Matrics will be writing English Paper 1 at 9am.

Learners in Cape Town told BuaNews they had studied hard and were ready for the exam.

One learner from Cape Town High School in Langa, who did not want to be named, said English was an important subject. "I will have to pass it."

The learner, who hopes to study law at the University of the Western Cape next year, said his favourite subject was Life Orientation and he hoped to pass all his seven subjects.

Another learner from the same school said he was relieved that the date had finally come and that he was ready for the mental challenge.

"My brain is flashing. I'm a bit nervous but ready," he said, indicating that this morning's examination "is one of my stronger papers...it's going to be interesting."

He ruled out any chances of papers leaking to the learners.

He further said he was good at Maths and would certainly pass that subject. Physics was more challenging.

"Physics is a pain for most of us. It will chew you up and spit you out, but we are ready for the challenge," he said.

His favourite subject was Geography and after school, he wants to study climatology at the University of Cape Town.

He said that with the world facing climate change issues, climatologists would not run out of jobs in the future.

At Good Hope Seminary High School, one of the learners who spoke to BuaNews said English was an easy subject "because we use it every day."

"I'm a Maths person," she said, adding that she was ready for it on Friday.

However, her challenge was Life Science, but she would put in her best effort.

After finishing school, she said she would like to pursue a career in nursing.

Another learner from the same school said that English Paper 1 was her favourite subject. Her dream was to become a political scientist.
