Pretoria - The Department of Labour’s ministerial team will meet the leadership of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) for talks to end the wage strike by workers.
“The ministerial team will meet Numsa today and employers agreed to keep communication lines open in case there is a need for urgent consultation,” Labour spokesman Mokgadi Pela told SAnews on Tuesday.
Asked whether today’s discussions would end in an agreement, Pela was cautiously optimistic, saying she did not “want to raise expectations” but that “it’s possible”.
The 220 000 striking engineering and metals members have been demanding a one-year bargaining agreement comprising a 15% wage increase across the board and the scrapping of labour brokers. - SAnews.gov.za
