Pretoria - About 98 percent of the voting stations in KwaZulu-Natal opened on time for the Local Government Elections that are currently underway throughout the country.

According to the Provincial Electoral Officer Nonhlanhla Hlongwane, people turned out in large numbers to cast their votes.

"The elections are progressing very well and so far no incidences of violence or intimidations have been reported," she said.

They are 4358 voting stations in the province.

According to Hlongwane, about 4.6 million people have registered to vote in the province.

Hlongwane told BuaNews that political party members in the province were heeding to election guidelines.

"The mood of the people, both young and old is jovial," she said.

Only about two percent of the voting stations did not open on time due to minor technicalities but the problems have since been resolved.
