KZN legislature to swear in premier-elect

KwaZulu-Natal - The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature will today swear in the premier-elect and new members of the provincial legislature.

Provincial MEC for Finance and Economic Development, Dr Zweli Mkhize is expected to be elected as the new premier taking over the reigns from Sibusiso Ndebele who served as premier since 2004.

Prior to his appointment as the MEC for Finance and Economic Development in November 2004, Dr Mkhize had served as the MEC for Health in KwaZulu-Natal since 1994. He held this position for 10 years making him the longest serving Provincial Health MEC in the country.

Acting premier Mike Mabuyakhulu or finance portfolio committee chairperson Belinda Scott could become KwaZulu-Natal finance MEC, while Willies Mchunu, Speaker of the legislature, could be the agriculture MEC in a new-look KZN cabinet.

The province will inaugurate its new premier at a ceremony, to be held in Pietermaritzburg on Monday, where he is also expected to announce the new members of his administration.

Meanwhile, in Parliament today proceedings are underway for the first sitting of the National Assembly when members will meet to, amongst others, elect the country's new President.

Parliament's National Assembly (NA) is set to meet for the first time to swear in its 400 new members, elect its Presiding Officers and elect the President of the Republic.
