Durban - KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Weziwe Thusi, has heaped praise on a Durban gymnast who bagged the gold medal in the women's vault at the 3rd Artistic Gymnastics World Cup competition in Doha.
Jennifer Khwela beat 67 other gymnasts to claim the title.
"Jennifer has made history and achieved what no other South African gymnast has achieved and as a department we are particularly proud because she is a product of our development programme," Thusi said.
Khwela previously received the KZN Premier's Sportswoman of the Year Award in the junior category.
She was also the first black senior national champion in Women's Artistic Gymnastics at the South African Gymnastic Games in Cape Town in 2008.
"As a province and indeed country we must congratulate her and celebrate her victory".
"Jennifer has cemented her place amongst the world's best and I am confident that come 2012 she will be one of the gymnasts to look out for at the London Olympic Games," said Thusi.
