Kirsten named Proteas coach

Durban - Gary Kirsten has been appointed coach of the South African cricket team, while AB de Villiers will be captain of both ODI and T20 squads.

Hashim Amla will be de Villiers's vice-captain and Graeme Smith's deputy in the Test squad.

In addition to these changes, former Proteas' paceman Allan Donald will soon start his new job as SA's bowling coach.

"I am humbled by my appointment and looking forward to working with the players and adding value to the team, which I think I can add. It's all about the players. We'll do our best to get them ready and I promise you, we will give 100 per cent of our efforts," said Kirsten.

Kirsten, who led India to their recent World Cup victory, said he had a tremendous time on the subcontinent but, "as time moves on, I had to consider new things."

Kirsten has appointed provincial side Warriors' coach side Russell Domingo as his assistant coach.

"He has achieved considerable success with the South Africa A side and this is a natural progression in his coaching career, to move up to the highest level," said Cricket South Africa's CEO Gerald Majola on the appointment.

Donald recently coached the New Zealand's bowlers for the duration of 2011 World Cup.

"When I got the call from Gary (Kirsten), it took me about half-a-second to say yes ... Some of my bags were already packed (for New Zealand) - it was very close," said Donald.

He added: "This is a very special day for me. I've dreamt about it and finally my dream has come to fruition. I'm very excited to be part of it."

Kirsten, who assumes his role from August 1, said for now he is looking forward to seeing his family and spending time with them - "a whole lot of time in fact."

The Proteas' 2011/2012 season starts in October when they host the Australians.

Meanwhile, newly appointed de Villiers's said: "I'm really excited and looking forward to the next period of my career. I am ready to learn and I have been very lucky to have had Graeme as my captain for the last seven years. He has been an unbelievable captain and I will work very closely with Hash (Amla) and the coach going forward."
