Khayelitsha residents to get temp IDs after fire disaster

Pretoria - Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor will on Friday lead a team of departmental officials, which will be issuing temporary Identity Documents (IDs) and other relevant documentation to those affected by the devastating New Year's Day fire in Khayelitsha.

The drive will take place at the OR Tambo Hall, New Way in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, at 10am.

According to the Cape Metro Disaster Management Centre, which the department is part of, the fire on New Year's Day affected the following areas: Danoon, where about 15 houses were destroyed, leaving approximately 220 people homeless; section WB and BM in Khayelitsha, 920 shacks burnt down, leaving more than 3 200 people destitute, and in the Joe Slovo section, where 16 shacks were destroyed and about 65 people left homeless. 

Other government departments, including Social Development, will also be available to assist with social relief once the Department of Home Affairs has provided the affected people with their temporary IDs and other enabling documents. - SAnews.gov.za
