Jobs Fair to bring opportunities to Khayelitsha

Wednesday, October 17, 2018

The Department of Labour will on Friday host the Jobs Fair, an initiative bringing potential employers and work-seekers together under one roof.

The fair, which will take place at Khayelitsha Stadium in the Western Cape, is in response to the recent Presidential Jobs Summit.

“The Jobs Fair, spearheaded by the Public Employment Services (PES) branch of the Department of Labour, is aimed at giving work-seekers an opportunity to meet with potential employers, who can assist with their placement in different forms of employment including learnerships, internships or job opportunities,” the department said on Wednesday.

The day-long event, which will be led by Minister Mildred Oliphant, will also provide work-seekers with information on career guidance, how to apply for jobs as well as to prepare them for job interview processes

Different institutions such as SETAs will also be available to provide information on self-employment initiatives and funding.

Other government departments, learning institutions, trade unions, private employers, the Electoral Commission, Department of Home Affairs as well as the Labour Department’s entities such as the Unemployment Insurance Fund and the Compensation Fund are expected to be at the Jobs Fair.

The Jobs Fair initiative is one of a basket of interventions by the department to alleviate the crisis of unemployment, especially that of youth in South Africa. It was launched by Oliphant in 2012.

Through the Jobs Fair, Oliphant seeks to build closer working relationships with other social partners and provide a link between work-seekers and potential job opportunities.
