Job creation tops agenda in Limpopo

Pretoria - Job creation will be at the forefront of Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale's State of the Province Address later this week.

The Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the fourth quarter of 2010, released by Statistics South Africa last week, showed that the province created the most jobs in the quarter at 57 000.

"Our government is committed to implement the five key priorities of the current electoral mandate, with particular focus on the creation of decent work and sustainable livelihoods. The creation of 57 000 jobs in our province demonstrates that our government clusters have taken concrete steps to respond to the challenge of unemployment," said Premier Cassel on Monday.

Government's key priorities are education, health, rural development and agrarian development, the creation of work and fighting crime.

"Premier Mathale will give further indication on how the provincial government will assist in creating more jobs in the province when he delivers the State of the Province on 18 February 2011. This will be in response to President Jacob Zuma's call for the creation of jobs made during the State of the Nation Address," said spokesperson Tebatso Mabitsela.

In his State of the Nation Address last week, President Zuma announced several initiatives to boost job creation, including the setting up of a R9 billion jobs fund.

The Limpopo Employment Growth and Development Plan, with its 8 High Impact Growth Catalytic Projects, is a key driver of employment and growth in the province. The plan hopes to put the province on a high economic growth path so it can contribute to the Gross Domestic Product to the national economy.
