Pretoria - The Department of Home Affairs Director General, Mkuseli Apleni, has extended well wishes to former President Nelson Mandela on behalf of Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma and the IEC chairperson, Dr Brigalia Bam.

"We join the people of our country and indeed the world in extending our best wishes to President Nelson Mandela," said the Director General, during a briefing regarding the department's efforts to ensure South Africans have their IDs before the voter registration weekend.

"Our thoughts and prayers reach out to him as he undergoes his routine test in hospital in Johannesburg, convinced that he is indeed in good medical hands at the hospital," he said.

The former president was admitted to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg yesterday for routine tests. There have been concerns over the elderly statesman's health.

Earlier today, President Jacob Zuma wished Madiba well and requested that the family be accorded space to support him in privacy and dignity.

Zuma, who is attending the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, is being kept abreast of developments by the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Lindiwe Sisulu, whose department is responsible for the health care of current and former Presidents.
