Pretoria - As South Africans prepare to celebrate Mandela Day, Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies has called on the community of Hopetown in the Northern Cape to make everyday a Mandela Day by helping the needy.
Speaking to the community on Thursday, Minister Davies urged them to be selfless in helping others.
He was there to hand over blankets and food parcels to 40 elderly residents.
“Every year since 2010 the world recognises and celebrates July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day in honour of the former President Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of the selfless life that he dedicated to making our country and the whole world a better place for all people to live in.
“You can also make a contribution and change someone’s life for the better. Reach out to those who seek aid and provide the little that you can to people that are less fortunate,” explained Minister Davies.
The Minister added that the dti is committed to improving the lives of the people in the Northern Cape through supporting the agro-processing industry.
The Special Economic Zone that the department plans to establish in Upington will go a long way in boosting the economy of the province and creating job opportunities.
The world celebrates Madiba's birthday on 18 July as it was declared by the United Nations in 2009 as Nelson Mandela International Day.
Mandela Day is an initiative dedicated to giving back to those less fortunate, the vulnerable and marginalised in society.
The day also actively encourages service to others, just as Madiba did when he gave many years of his life in service to humanity. – SAnews.gov.za
