Pretoria - The Gauteng government is putting together resources to help over 1 000 families who have been left destitute by the recent floods.

Families around the province, including Orlando West in Soweto, have been rendered homeless by last Wednesday's heavy rains.

"We want the families to know that ... we feel (for) them. Through various municipalities, we will provide assistance to those who have been affected by these floods," said Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane in a statement on Monday.

Mokonyane also conveyed her condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones due to the heavy rains.

The provincial Department of Local Government and Housing is co-ordinating relief efforts jointly with the Emergency Management Services of affected municipalities.

The department is also responsible for the organisation of the province's disaster management, including the Disaster Management Fund.

"We applaud the support already demonstrated by the caring citizens of Gauteng and we call on all our communities to continue lending a helping hand to those affected by this natural disaster," said Mokonyane.

As a result of flooding, most of roads were also not accessible for both pedestrians and motorists.
