Pretoria - Traffic volumes are expected to pick-up on all national routes later this afternoon when most holiday makers make their way to various destinations for the Easter weekend.

Traffic authorities have already intensified efforts to deal with reckless and negligent driving.

While the number of vehicles passing through the country's major toll gates are still manageable, traffic authorities expect them to pick up by this afternoon.

The Department of Transport warned motorists and public transport operators that unroadworthy vehicles and bad driving would not be tolerated.

Heavy traffic volumes are expected on the N1 to Polokwane with most of the travelers heading to Moria for the annual pilgrimage. Thousands of buses and taxis are expected to pass through the Kranskop tollgate on the N1.

The N3 to Durban as well as the N1 to the Free State, Western Cape and Eastern Cape will be heavily policed.

Motorists are advised to to keep a safe following distanc and drive with their head lamps on in those parts of the country where rain is persisting.
