Heavy snow forces N3 closure

Pretoria - Severe weather conditions and heavy snowfalls on Monday have forced the closure of the N3 highway at Van Reenens Pass between the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, an official said.

"We can confirm that anyone planning to travel on the N3 between areas such as Harrysmith and the Bergville Interchange should consider cancelling the trip as the road is closed [due] to snow," said N3 Toll Concession spokesperson, Andy Visser.

She said traffic was being diverted to the N11 via New Castle and Ladysmith, and advised motorists to avoid the road for the rest of the day.

"Unfortunately we don't know how long the situation is going to last but the conditions are forecast for the rest of the day, so we recommend people delay all unnecessary trips to the affected areas," said Visser.
