Hassle free start to Gauteng's special votes

Pretoria - Special voting got off to an incident free start in Gauteng on Monday, with thousands of voters casting their special votes, said the provincial Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

About 38 000 registered voters in Gauteng applied to cast their ballots during the special voting process, said Moses Pitso, provincial IEC communications officer.

Of this figure, 50 percent had applied to cast their votes at voting stations, which was done on Monday, while the remaining number of voters applied to cast their votes from their homes, he added.

"All reports suggest everything went smoothly. The number of those who voted yesterday was not huge - a minimum of 14 000 out of more than 5 million registered voters in the province - so not many challenges arose," Pitso said.

On Tuesday, IEC officials in the province were finalising home visits for those who had applied to cast their special votes from their homes.
