Govt will not negotiate through the media

Pretoria - The Ministry of Public Service and Administration (MPSA) remains resolute on not communicating the 2011/2012 wage negotiations through the media

Minister for Public Service and Administration, Richard Baloyi has expressed shock at the decision by the unions at the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) to communicate the 2011/2012 wage negotiations through the media.

"The decision to embark on a media briefing by the unions today has taken place irrespective of an agreement between government and the unions to negotiate behind closed doors in the interest of promptly finding an amicable position," the minister said in a statement on Friday.

"There is no breakdown in negotiations as far as government is concerned. The process of salary negotiations in its nature is a challenging one that is ongoing until a compromise is reached."

While both parties are still negotiating in the bargaining council, Minister Baloyi is also engaging at a higher level with his counterparts to ensure the process soon reaches finality.

The department has called on the leadership of the unions to ensure their representatives adhere to the joint media protocol and that they focus collectively on finding a solution in the Bargaining Council.
