Govt rolls up its sleeves for floods

Pretoria - Cabinet has assured the public that government is doing everything to mitigate the impact of the floods.

The floods, which were a result of constant heavy rains, left over 50 people killed, 33 district municipalities declared disaster areas, thousands of houses damaged and farmers reeling from crop damage.

Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane said the National Disaster Management Centre was monitoring the situation countrywide and providing regular reports to the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) and other relevant institutions.

This in addition to the 24-hour operations room that has been reactivated to ensure government and the public are kept up-to-date about the floods.

"Cabinet has noted the impact of the floods in a number of communities and re-affirmed its commitment to providing assistance and support to all affected communities," Chabane said on Thursday, following the first Cabinet meeting for the year.

Chabane said the IMC, tasked with identifying the damage that the floods have caused, had submitted a report to Cabinet.

Cabinet was looking at the figures and President Jacob Zuma will give details on the matter during the State of the Nation Address next week Thursday.

"The public must be assured that government is doing everything to mitigate the impact of the floods," Chabane said.
