Cape Town - Although there are no immediate security threats, government will ensure that South Africa is better organised and ready to respond to any major threats that might arise.

Delivering his department's Budget Vote in Parliament on Wednesday, State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele said there was a need to re-evaluate South Africa's strategic interests and what might threaten the country.

"There is no major or immediate threat to our country; there are some areas of risk and vulnerability that we will focus on.

"As part of this process, we need to ensure that we are better organised and have the requisite capacity to respond with speed and precision to major threats," Minister Cwele said.

In the next five years, he said, the department will prioritise the finalisation of the National Security Strategy to guide a common approach in upholding national security.

"This will also spell out a management system that will ensure that all the capabilities of government and the nation are effectively harnessed and coordinated to better deal with threats confronting the country," the minister said
