Pretoria - Government is still committed to the implementation of Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO), says Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele.

"We are committed to the implementation of AARTO throughout the country in 2010. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) will continue with our zero tolerance approach against traffic offenders," he said.

AARTO seeks to create an efficient road traffic management environment in the country and enhance a culture of compliance through the point's demerit system.

The system was first piloted in Pretoria from 16 July 2008 it has now been extended to the municipal area of Johannesburg.

The implementation of AARTO in the remainder of Gauteng is expected during 2009, where after the national roll out of AARTO will follow.

Warning motorists to drive safely, Ndebele said: "Obey the law or lose your licence."

The minister was speaking at the opening of the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses (PIARC) seminar on promoting road safety for vulnerable road users.
