Govt calls for swift justice in rape cases

Pretoria – Government has called on law enforcement authorities to leave no stone unturned in bringing to book those who rape and abuse children.

Outraged and concerned at the report of the rape of the 11-year-old girl in Braamfischerville, who was allegedly throttled, stabbed and raped, government has demanded that justice be served not only in this case, but in others that include sexual violence.

Acting Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) CEO, Phumla Williams, said government has put in place systems such as the Constitution, supporting legislation, policies and programmes aimed at fighting crime in the county.

However, Williams warned that without communities actively working with government to combat the scourge of violence that threatens to destroy communities, the fight against crimes directed at women and children will not be won.

“Communities, NGOs, the business sector, faith-based organisations and traditional leaders need to join hands and work together to defend and protect the rights of all South Africans and in particular, women and children.

“We need to jointly take responsibility and action to ensure that we bring back the values of respect for human dignity, which is one of the bases of our democracy. As the country is uniting and praying for Madiba, let us also spare a thought and pray for a safer South Africa,” said Williams. – SAnews.gov.za
