Government prepares to bid farewell to Zola Skweyiya

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

In honour of the late Dr Zola Skweyiya, government will hold an Official Memorial Service for the former Cabinet Minister on Wednesday.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on State Funerals made the announcement on Tuesday.

The official memorial service will take place at midday in Hall J at Tshwane Events Centre.

Skweyiya passed away on 11 April at the age of 75 after a period of hospitalization.

He served as Minister of the Public Service and Administration from 1994 to 1999 and later as Minister of Social Development before retiring as a Member of Parliament in 2009.

In the same year, Dr Skweyiya was appointed High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland - a position that acknowledged the long period Dr Skweyiya had spent in exile during the apartheid era.

Following Skweyiya’s passing, President Cyril Ramaphosa said Skweyiya’s contribution will be missed and declared a special official funeral, Category 1 in his honour.

“Dr Skweyiya’s endearing engagement and his contribution to our society - especially his role as the first Minister to lead the Public Service in a democratic South Africa - will be greatly missed and honoured,” said President Ramaphosa.

The funeral service will take place on Saturday, 21 April 2018, at CRC Church, Corner Lynnwood Road and Solomon Mahlangu Drive, Tshwane.

The IMC said further details on the funeral arrangements will be communicated soon. – SAnews.gov.za
