The Gauteng Provincial Government has welcomed the sentencing of the serial rapist, who came to be known as the “Quantum rapist”.

One of two taxi drivers who was behind the abduction, rape and robbing of female taxi commuters in Gauteng, Lebogang Gift Mokoena, was sentenced to 13 life sentences and 340 years in prison by South Gauteng High Court in Palm Ridge, Ekurhuleni on Thursday.

Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza said the harsh sentence given to Mokoena will serve as a deterrent.

It was also a welcome message at the start the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children. The campaign kicks off on Sunday.

“As the Gauteng Provincial Government, we have a zero-tolerance for the abuse of women and children. We welcome the sentencing of Mokoena and it is a victory for all Gauteng women.

“Gender based violence has no place in society and we celebrate every time when a perpetrator faces the full might of the law,” said the MEC.

She applauded the police, the judiciary and everyone who worked to ensure the sentencing.

“We celebrate with those who survived the brutal attacks,” Mayathula-Khoza said. – SAnews.gov.za
