Gauteng schools receive applications for next year

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

Pretoria - The Gauteng Department of Education says it is encouraged by the enthusiasm shown by parents in applying early for the 2014 school year.

This morning, schools started receiving application forms from a number of parents. This follows a call by the provincial department for parents to go to their nearest school to pick up application forms for learners who want to start Grade 1 or Grade 8 in a Gauteng school in 2014.

The submission of applications forms started today and will close on 21 May 2013.

Department spokesperson Charles Phahlane said they have sent the department’s officials to monitor areas where there is high demand for space.

The documents needed for applying, in addition to the application form, are birth certificate or a certified copy; immunisation card for Grade 1; proof of residence or work address; transfer card or latest report card, and study permits for legal immigrants.

Provincial Education MEC Barbara Creecy advised parents to insist on, and be provided with, a waiting list number upon submission of the completed application form with the relevant documents.

The waiting list number will indicate if you are on waiting list A (for parents within a feeder area of a school) or waiting list B (parents outside of a feeder area of a school).

Creecy also urged parents who find themselves on a waiting list to make sure they also apply to alternative schools to avoid disappointment.

District directors will sign off waiting lists between 11 June and 12 July. At the start of the third term, (15 - 26 July), parents will receive letters informing them of the outcome of their application.

Parents should accept or reject placement within seven school days of receiving the letters. – SAnews.gov.za
