Gauteng residents thanked for observing mourning period

Johannesburg - Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, on behalf of the Executive Council, has expressed gratitude to all Gauteng residents for observing the mourning period with dignity and respect following the passing of the former President Nelson Mandela.

“I would like to thank all Gauteng residents for bidding their final farewell to tata Madiba in a dignified and respectful manner throughout the mourning period,” said Mokonyane.

She said that official mourning sites were availed to afford residents across the province from all faiths and cultural backgrounds the opportunity to pay tribute to the former President.

She said the spirit of Madiba should live in everyone’s hearts and inspire residents to continue to take South Africa to new heights and build a better quality of life for all.

“We should all emulate Madiba’s good traits. We can all aspire to be more like him by serving our local communities and community organisations with integrity and compassion. This will ensure that Gauteng and South Africa will be a better place to live in,” said Mokonyane.

According to Mokonyane, South Africans should be reminded daily of the task that utata set before us, when he said: “For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” – SAnews.gov.za
