The Gauteng Provincial Legislature has joined the rest of South Africa in mourning Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, a heroine of the struggle and mother of the nation.

“She is one of many strong women whose names and honour will forever echo down the corridors of history for the role they played in fighting for a non-racist, non-sexist and equal society,” Speaker of the Provincial Legislature Ntombi Mekgwe said.

Madikizela-Mandela, who died at the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg, on Monday, was one of South Africa’s struggle stalwarts who dedicated their entire lives to the fight against apartheid.

Mekgwe said the early years of Madikizela-Mandela’s life were full of challenges and demanding situations, but she still managed to rise above it all and continued to play her role in the fight against an unjust regime of the time.

“We pay tribute to her and will always be grateful for her sacrifices for our nation, and the many lessons she left us with. May her soul rest peacefully – reunited with the many fallen heroes and heroines of our nation,” Mekgwe said.

Madikizela-Mandela will be buried on 14 April during a special official funeral, category 1. – SAnews.gov.za
