Bloemfontein - The Free State government has heeded the 67 minutes global call to play their role in changing the world around them in honour of Madiba.

Free State Premier, Ace Magashule, said departments across the province had planned different activities to mark Mandela Day on Sunday.

Celebrations begin on Saturday with the hosting of a Mandela Day Lecture and Operation Hlasela Fund dinner in Kroonstad in an effort to raise funds.

Operation Hlasela is a FS government project that has been accelerating service delivery, alleviating poverty and creating job opportunities.

On Sunday, provincial MEC for Education, Tate Makgoe, will dedicate his time on at Setiloane Secondary School. The MEC and officials from the municipality and the department will paint an identified block at the school.

The provincial Department of Water Affairs will be spending the day at Jean Webber Home for the Disabled. Activities of the day include cleaning the yard, fixing leaking taps, donating clothes and computers to the centre.

Mandela Day is an annual celebration of Nelson Mandela's life and a global call to action for people to recognise their individual ability to make an imprint and change the world around them. It derives from the 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity.

Mandela Day has been created to inspire people from every corner of the world to embrace the values that have embodied Nelson Mandela's life - democracy, equality, reconciliation, diversity, responsibility, respect and freedom - for these are the values of Nelson Mandela and they are his legacy to the world.
