Bloemfontein - The Free State Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation has developed a Sesotho Soccer Terminology book as part of its legacy project for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and beyond.

The Sesotho Soccer Terminology book will contribute towards enabling radio and television sports commentators to have a variety of soccer terms and also enhance the love and interest of soccer lovers to learn about various soccer terms in Sesotho.

"We wanted to have a legacy project as a province for 2010 and this is one of our legacy projects that will be relevant for 2010 and beyond. We chose Sesotho because 64 percent of the Free State population speak Sesotho, and it is a very dominant language," said MEC Dan Kgothule.

"To us, the project means that we have done something out of the ordinary and we have managed to set a trend. Free Staters are known to be very creative people but the problem is that most people don't like taking risks, so we are bringing an end to that kind of practice. We would like to see this follow in other provinces."

He said the book will also contribute to people's access to information, the development of African languages and terminology development in line with the strategic objective of promoting multilingualism. He added that it will also redress the past linguistic imbalances and develop previously marginalised languages.

According to Kgothule, the department had put together a team of experts, those who are very knowledgeable in Sesotho and those who are knowledgeable in soccer to assist in making the project a success.
