Durban - A booklet, among other publications, will be launched during COP17 to highlight the city's mitigation- and adaptation-focused interventions.
Various projects from the Municipal Climate Protection Programme will feature in a booklet - "Durban: a Climate for Change - Transforming Africa's Future".
It is a brief document listing each project with a description, budget, key learning outcomes and contact details.
The booklet dubbed the Atlas is specifically targeted at accredited visitors to COP17/CMP7, and will be complemented by site visits to some of these projects during the negotiations.
These site visits, called the Durban Green Tour, will consist of two routes that will focus upon mitigation and adaptation projects respectively.
The Green Tour will run once every day and will alternate between the mitigation and adaptation tours.
The tours are free and are expected to take no longer than four hours.
The Adaptation Tour is 80km and passes the eThekwini Water and Sanitation Department's energy-and-water efficiency building and proceeds to the Durban Beachfront -delegates will find out about the Coastal Management Plan in response to sea-level rise.
The tour passes the Moses Mabhida Stadium, where people will hear about eThekwini's initiative to host a carbon neutral 2010 football World Cup and the greening of the stadium.
Other stops include, the Green Hub/Corridor, the Beachwood Mangroves and out to peri-urban suburbs, passing an eThekwini low-cost solar water heater project in a low-cost housing initiative, the Buffelsdraai landfill site, where one can learn about the community reforestation project.
The Mitigation Tour, around 25km, will explore municipal buildings (City Engineers' Complex), where delegates will be informed about the Energy Office's energy-efficiency programme.
During this tour, information will be provided on the Integrated Transport Plan, the GHG Inventory, and the Shisa Solar Water Heater Projects, as well as the low carbon Durban project.
Those attending the tours should take suitable walking shoes, wear clothes that are ideal for warm weather, sunscreen and a hat. Given that it is Durban's rainy season, an umbrella or jacket would also be a good idea. Water, a small snack and a project folder will be provided.
A staff member of the eThekwini Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department and a qualified tour guide will accompany each tour to provide information about the projects and Durban respectively.
