Pretoria – The Amathole District Municipality has advised the community of Fort Beaufort to boil water before consumption.
Municipal spokesperson Siyabulela Makunga said that the municipality is experiencing problems at its water treatment works and this may have an effect on water quality.
“It is further regretted that some areas will experience water outages while the problem is being resolved. The municipality is attending to the issue as a matter of urgency and it is expected that the water supply will return to normal by the weekend.
“Any inconvenience is deeply regretted and the municipality would like to assure its consumers of its commitment to excellent and sustainable services to all its communities,” said Makunga.
The municipality also appealed to members of the public to visit satellite offices across the district and immediately report all emergencies or call municipal offices on 043 701 4000 or e-mail info@amathole.gov.za.
The Water Services Act 107 of 1997 provides for the municipality to supply water and sanitation in the district. Further to this, the authority and responsibility for the provision of effective, efficient and sustainable water services for all communities within the Amathole District Municipality (with the exception of those residing within demarcated boundaries of BCM) rests with the municipality as delegated in June 2003.
In recognition of this constitutional and legislative obligation, the district municipality has since declared supply of water and sanitation as essential services. – SAnews.gov.za
