Flood warning issued for North West

Friday, January 30, 2009

North West - The North West Provincial Disaster Management Centre has issued a flood warning and appealed to residents to be careful when crossing rivers and bridges.

The warning comes as heavy rainfall fell throughout the province on Thursday.

The South African Weather Services has predicted that more showers and thundershowers can be expected in some parts of the province. District reports indicate that most rivers and dams in the province are filled to capacity, meaning more rain might cause them to burst their banks.

According to the South African Weather Service, Swartruggens, Zeerust, Rustenburg and Klerksdorp experienced most rainfall over the past 24 hours with 28, 22, 21, and 17mm falling respectively.

The provincial centre, which co-ordinates disaster relief efforts, has also urged people residing in mud houses to report threatening conditions to members of ward committees, ward councillors and or their respective municipalities in order to prevent unnecessary casualties.

Meanwhile, draining of water from yards by the fire and emergency services of Maquassi Hills Local Municipality has brought the threat of flooding to houses in Maquassi and Lebaleng Extensions 3 and 4 under control.

Gauteng has also been experiencing heavy rains, Johannesburg emergency services earlier this week warned motorists to drive carefully in the wet weather and put on their headlights. In Pretoria, the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality said it was on flood alert and ready to assist residents.

The rain has resulted in numerous accidents and traffic disruptions as many traffic lights were out of order
